A Woman Named Yssabeau
»A Woman Named Yssabeau« is a contemporary fairy-tale in which a young deer woman explores an unknown and distant Land. Observing the unfamiliar behavior of its people, she feels threatened by the constraints this new society demands of her in order to fit in. Fearing that transformation could slip into annihilation she walks hesitant through the process of cultural assimilation.
Entitled after a poem by Paul Zech and inspired by tribal rituals of indigenous Mexican cultures as well as the aesthetics of the Rococo period and cineastic expressionism the movie gives a kaleidoscopic view on a peculiar world the viewers find themselves dislocated to, to portray the cultural estrangement of an immigrant and challenge recognizable cultural borders.
It premiered in the Berlinale 2012 and has since been shown in several renowned international festivals.
